IPR Trends Jan-Jun 2016: Patent and Trademark Statistics
A. Patent Applications
1. New applications for all three types of patents were down by 2.55% to 34,494 cases.
2. Applications for invention (20,622) and utility model (9,927) patents were down by 2.17% and 6.23%, respectively. Meanwhile, design (3,945) applications were up by 5.74% (Table 1).
3. Invention applications (7,447) by residents were down by 6.84%; those by non-residents (13,175) were up by 0.69% (Table 1).
4. Breakdown by country, Japan (5,994) topped the list, followed by the US (3,409), South Korea (807), China (649), and Germany (631) (Fig.1).
5. The top five domestic invention filing corporations were Hon Hai (176), AU Optronics (133), Acer (109), Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) (87), and China Steel (78) (Fig.2).
6. Among the top five invention filing foreign corporations, Intel (375) continued to stay on top, followed by Qualcomm (313), Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) (204), Tokyo Electron (166), and Applied Materials (148) (Fig.2).
7. Inventions by domestic corporations (5,144), universities (776), and research institutes (259) were down by 8.16%, 9.56% and 7.17%, respectively. Conversely, those by individual applicants (1,268) were up by 0.96%(Fig. 3). Among domestic universities, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology (52) and National Tsing Hua University (52) both topped the list, followed by National Cheng Kung University (40) and National Chiao Tung University (32) (Table 3).
B. Patent Grants
1. Patent grants for all three types of patents were up by 2.14% at 38,851 cases (Table 4).
2. Patent grants for invention (24,933) and design (4,017) were up by 7.01% and 11.49%, respectively. However, patent grants for utility model (9,901) were down by 11.07% (Table 4).
3. Invention patents granted to residents (10,773) and non-residents (14,160) were up by 3.18% and 10.12%, respectively (Table 4).
4. Breakdown by country, Japan (6,050) topped the list, followed by the US (4,187), South Korea (961), China (681), and Germany (565) (Fig.4).
5. The top five domestic corporations being granted invention patents were Hon Hai (352), ITRI (348), AU Optronics (316), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) (304), and Wistron (291) (Fig.5). The top five foreign corporations being granted invention patents were SEL (427), Intel (411), Tokyo Electron (232), Apple (218), and Qualcomm (201) (Fig.5).
C. Trademark Applications
1. New applications were up by 1.50% to 38,269 cases (Table 1).
2. Domestic and foreign applications totaled at 27,684 (+0.32%) and 10,585 (+4.72%) cases, respectively (Table 1).
3. Breakdown by country, China (2,169) topped the list, followed by the US (1,904), Japan (1,739), South Korea (803), and Hong Kong (739) (Fig.1).
