IPR Trends Q3 2016: Patent and Trademark Statistics
A. Patent
1. New applications for all three types of patents rose by 0.34% to 18,121 cases (Table 1).
2. Inventions (10,849) and utility models (5,045) decreased by 0.89% and 1.75%, respectively, while designs (2,227) increased by 12.59% (Table 1).
3. Inventions by residents (4,066) and non-residents (6,783) dropped by 0.59% and 1.06%, respectively (Table 1).
4. By country, Japan (3,069) came on top, followed by the US (1,753), South Korea (442), China (335), and Germany (314) (Fig.1).
5. The top five domestic corporations filing new invention patents were Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) (211), Hon Hai (88), Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) (66), AU Optronics (59), and Acer (46) (Fig.2).
6. In foreign corporations, Intel (220) came on top, followed by Qualcomm (168), Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (119), Nitto Denko (83), and Tokyo Electron (71) (Fig.2).
7. Inventions by domestic corporations (2,868) and research institutes (159) saw 0.95% and 11.97% growth, respectively. However, inventions by universities (388) were down by 14.91%, whereas the number of inventions by individual applicants (651) remained the same as in Q3 2015 (Fig.3). Among domestic universities, Kun Shan University (30) topped the list, followed by National Tsing Hua University (29) and National Cheng Kung University (26) (Table 3).
B. Patent Grants
1. All three types of patent grants (17,811) fell by 9.06% (Table 4).
2. Inventions (11,320), utility models (4,739), and designs (1,752) fell by 3.93%, 17.88% and 13.74%, respectively (Table 4).
3. Inventions granted to residents (4,874) and non-residents (6,446) fell by 4.99% and 3.11%, respectively (Table 4).
4. By country, Japan (2,894) came on top, followed by the US (1,722), South Korea (505), China (336), and Germany (263) (Fig.4).
5. The top five domestic corporations being granted the most inventions were Hon Hai (284), TSMC (169), ITRI (137), AU Optronics (109), and Wistron (103) (Fig.5).
6. The top five foreign corporations being granted the most inventions were Intel (203), Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (156), Tokyo Electron (110), LG Chem (92), Apple (84) and Samsung Display (84) (Fig.5).
C. Trademark
1. New applications (19,874) decreased by 2.11% (Table 1).
2. Resident and non-resident applications totaled at 14,513 (-1.44%) and 5,361 (-3.87%) cases, respectively (Table 1).
3. By country, China (957) came on top, followed by Japan (910), the US (875), Hong Kong (400), and South Korea (272) (Fig.1).
