IPR Trends Q1 2017: Patent and Trademark Statistics

A. Patent
1. New applications for all three types of patents rose by 6% to 17,670 cases (Table 1).2. Inventions (11,174), utility models (4,659), and designs (1,837) increased by 8%, 2% and 3%, respectively (Table 1).
3. Inventions by residents (3,769) and non-residents (7,405) were up by 8% and 9%, respectively (Table 1).
4. By country, Japan (3,540) came on top, followed by the US (1,604), China (425), Hong Kong (417), and South Korea (401) (Fig.1).
5. The top five domestic corporations filing new invention patents were Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) (132,+326%), Mediatek INC. (83,+592%) , Hon Hai (78,+63%), Acer (61,+22%), and AU Optronics (58,-22%) (Fig.2).
6. In foreign corporations, Alibaba (372,+879%) came on top, followed by Intel (159,+5%), Qualcomm (144,-4%), Tokyo Electron (99,+15%), and Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (98,-7%) (Fig.2).
7. Inventions by domestic corporations (2,735), universities (320) and individual applicants (602) saw 11%, 3% and 1% growth, respectively. However, inventions by research institutes (109) were down by 14% (Fig.3). Among domestic universities, National Tsing Hua University (30) topped the list, followed by Chang Gung University (16) and National Taiwan University (15) (Table 3).


B. Patent Grants
1. All three types of patent grants (17,923) fell by 6% (Table 4).
2. Inventions (12,130), utility models (4,178), and designs (1,615) fell by 3%, 11% and 13%, respectively (Table 4).
3. Inventions granted to residents (5,053) and non-residents (7,077) fell by 4% and 3%, respectively (Table 4).
4. By country, Japan (3,370) came on top, followed by the US (2,168), China (550), South Korea (540), and Germany (406) (Fig.4).
5. The top five domestic corporations being granted the most inventions were Hon Hai (275), ITRI (177), TSMC (165), AU Optronics (142), and Macronix (86) (Fig.5).
6. The top five foreign corporations being granted the most inventions were Intel (270), Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (195), Apple (108), Tokyo Electron (110), and Mitsubishi Electric (84) (Fig.5).


C. Trademark
1. New applications (18,976) increased by 5% (Table 1).
2. Resident applications (14,097) were up by 9%. Meanwhile, non-resident applications (4,879) were down by 5% (Table 1).
3. By country, China (934) came on top, followed by Japan (877), the US (802), South Korea (304), and Hong Kong (296) (Fig.1).
