IPR Trends Jan-Jun 2017: Patent and Trademark Statistics

A. Patent Applications
1. New applications for all three types of patents rose by 3% to 35,566 cases.
2. Inventions (21,913) and designs (3,959) were up by 6% and 0.4%. Meanwhile, utility models (9,694) applications were down by 2% (Table 1).
3. Inventions by residents (8,086) and non-residents (13,827) were up by 9% and 5% (Table 1).
4. By country, Japan (6,275) came on top, followed by the US (3,244), South Korea (822), China (807), and Hong Kong (589) (Fig.1).
5. The top five domestic corporations filing new invention patents were TSMC (329), Hon Hai (215), MTK(165), Acer (136), and AU Optronics (129) (Fig.2).
6. In foreign corporations, Alibaba (495) came on top, followed by Intel (269), Qualcomm (266), Applied Materials (236), and Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) (222) (Fig.2).
7. Inventions by domestic corporations (5,749) and individual applicants (1,347) saw 12% and 6% growth. However, inventions by universities (759) and research institutes (231) were down by 2% and 11% (Fig.3). Among domestic universities, National Tsing Hua University (56) came on top, followed by National Taiwan University (39), and National Cheng Kung University (37) (Table 3).
B. Patent Grants
1. All three types of patent grants (38,525) fell by 1% (Table 4).
2. Inventions (25,308) increased by 2%. However, utility models (9,684) and designs (3,533) decreased by 2% and 12% (Table 4).
3. Inventions granted to residents (10,531) were down by 2%. Meanwhile, non-residents (14,777) were up by 4% (Table 4).
4. By country, Japan (6,470) came on top, followed by the US (3,959), South Korea (1,064), China (838), and Germany (677) (Fig.4).
5. The top five domestic corporations being granted the most inventions were Hon Hai (483), TSMC (332), ITRI (323), AU Optronics (261), and Macronix (154) (Fig.5).
6. The top five foreign corporations being granted the most inventions were Intel (525), Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (374), Tokyo Electron (227), Apple (189), and Samsung Display (182) (Fig.5).
C. Trademark Applications
1. New applications (40,390) increased by 6% (Table 1).
2. Resident applications (30,028) were up by 8%. Meanwhile, non-resident applications (10,362) were down by 2% (Table 1).
3. By country, China (2,082) came on top, followed by Japan (1,841), the US (1,692), Hong Kong (713), and South Korea (668) (Fig.1).
