Fees vary depending on the type of patent application. There are four basic fees:

(1) The filing fee, which is non-refundable whether or not a patent is granted. This is the cost to have your application "processed" by TIPO. Please be reminded that your application may or may not be approved.

(2) The substantive examination fee for invention patent application, which is refundable if you withdraw your application before receiving a first office action. You pay this only to request substantive examination of an invention patent. Fees vary according to the number of "claims" and total number of pages of your invention patent application.

(3) The certificate fee. You pay this only if your application is approved.

(4) Patent annual fee. You pay this before the publication of patent and each subsequent year after the publication of patent. The fees paid keep the patent in effect.
