TIPO Publishes IPR Trends for First Half of 2023

For the first half of 2023, TIPO processed a total of 34,611 patent applications (all three types) and 44,653 trademark applications, a slight reduction of 0.4% and 4% respectively, compared to the same period last year.

The majority of patent applications were for invention patents (24,256), with only a slight reduction of 0.2%. Design patents (3,508) grew 2%, mainly due to a 9% increase in resident applications.

Taiwan enterprises applied for 7,635 invention patents, for a slight growth of 2% compared to the same period last year. Top ten resident applicants for invention patents include TSMC (1,711), which has topped the list for the seventh consecutive year in a row. MediaTek (321) broke its highest record since 2016 by filing over 300 applications for the first time. It grew by 114%, marking the largest increase. For the top five resident applicants for design patents, Acer topped the list by making 55 applications, and L&F Plastics (44) experienced the largest growth at 76%.

Non-resident patent applications were for mainly invention patents (14,866). Japan topped the list of the top five filing countries (regions) with 6,216 applications, and Mainland China (1,683) and Korea (1,263) both saw nearly 20% growth in the number of applications. TIPO also received 1,779 non-resident design patent applications, with Japan topping the list at 449.

Among top non-resident applicants for invention patents, Samsung Electronics Co. from Korea leapt to the top of the list with 430 applications, breaking through 400 and their company record for the first time. Coupang exhibited the largest increase at 238%, filing 159 applications.

On the list of top five non-resident applicants for design patents, Cartier from Switzerland topped the list with 72 applications. This marked the company’s highest number of applications, as well as its first time at the top of the list. Apple from the US filed 40 applications but saw the highest growth (1,233%) due to an extremely low baseline compared to the same period last year.

 

In the first half of 2023, TIPO received a total of 44,653 trademark applications in 56,198 classes, marking a decrease of 4% compared to the same period last year.

Residents filed a total of 35,169 trademark applications in the first half of 2023, with a majority (7,162) in Class 35 “Advertising, Business Management, Retail, Wholesale Services, etc.” Uni-President topped the list by filing 239 applications.

Non-residents filed a total of 9,484 trademark applications in the first half of 2023, with a majority (1,895) in Class 9 “Computer and Technology Products, etc.” SGMW from Mainland China topped the list of individual applicants with 84 applications.

A majority (12,198) of the trademark applications fell under “Agriculture,” followed by “Financial Services” (9,374) and “Health and Medical” (8,936). A majority (10,246) of “Agriculture” trademarks were filed by resident applicants, primarily for dining and hospitality. A majority (3,106) of non-resident applications were filed under “Research and Technology.”
