Top Ten Invention Patent Applicants in Q1 2025

In the second quarter of 2025, TIPO received a total of 17,349 patent applications across all three patent types, a 2% decrease compared with the same quarter in 2024 (Figure 1). Invention patents showed a slight 1% growth, as both domestic enterprises and academic institutions increased their filings, and TSMC was the top resident applicant with 562 applications, while Applied Materials from the US led non-resident applicants with 242 applications.

Among the 4,914 invention patent applications filed by resident applicants, enterprises accounted for 3,913, increasing 5% compared to the same period last year. The top three resident applicants were (Figure 2):

  • TSMC (562 applications);
  • Hon Hai (101 applications);
  • AU Optronics (91 applications).

Notably, TSMC has held the top spot for nine consecutive years since the second quarter of 2017. It is also worth highlighting that Hon Hai, which ranked second, recorded the highest year-on-year growth of 274% among the top resident applicants.

Non-residents filed 7,159 invention patent applications, and Japan led with 2,603 applications (Figure 3). The top three non-resident applicants were (Figure 2):

  • Applied Materials (242 applications) from the US;
  • Coupang (203 applications) from R. Korea;
  • Samsung Electronics (178 applications) from R. Korea.

There were 24,525 trademark registration applications, marking a 3% increase compared to the same period last year. Applications covered a total of 31,230 classes, reflecting a 6% growth (Figure 4), which is the highest number of applications for the second quarter since 2015.

By industry category, trademark applications were led by "Agriculture" with 6,364 applications, followed by "Health" with 5,181 applications, and "Business services" with 4,961 applications (Figure 5).

Note: The above statistical data is based on the “first applicant” of the applications when referencing applicants and nationalities. All percentage increases and decreases mentioned are compared with the same period in the previous year.
