TIPO Launches New Mechanism for Patent Applicants to Proactively Tag “Green Technology” Classification Symbols Starting September 2, 2026, Accelerating Corporate Sustainable Development
Effective September 2, 2026, TIPO has launched a new mechanism allowing patent applicants to proactively tag their applications as “Green Technology.” When filing an application for an invention or utility model patent, applicants may designate their invention or creation with a “Green Technology” classification symbol. Upon examination and verification by TIPO, this will be displayed alongside the laid-open or published information of the patent application.
To enable the industry to rapidly identify green technology patents, TIPO has introduced supplementary classification information under the Y02 scheme, which covers technologies or applications for mitigation or adaptation to climate change, of the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC). For green technology-related patent applications involving technical fields such as energy-saving technologies, new energy, and new energy vehicles, or those involving carbon reduction technologies and resource conservation, applicants may fill in the relevant Y02 classification symbol in the patent application form at the time of filing in accordance with the CPC Y02 classification scheme to indicate that their invention or creation pertains to green technology.
