TIPO’s Q3 2025 IPR Trends

In the third quarter of 2025, TIPO received a total of 17,991 patent applications across all three patent types—12,695 invention patents, 3,608 utility model patents, and 1,688 design patents—marking a 2% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. Invention patent filingsdropped slightly by 0.3%. Resident and non-resident applicants each accounted for 49.5% and 50.5%, respectively.

Residents filed 4,776 invention patent applications, with 3,727 of them (78%) submitted by businesses. The top ten resident applicants for invention patents were: TSMC (283), AU Optronics (91), Nanya Technology (87), Inventec (82), Delta (78), Hon Hai (76), MediaTek (70), Realtek (69), UMC (52), and Innolux (44).
TSMC has maintained the top spot for ten consecutive years since Q3 of 2016.

Non-resident applicants filed 7,919 invention patent applications. The top five countries (or regions) were: Japan (3,150), the United States (1,825), Mainland China (952), R. Korea (826), and Germany (219).

Among non-resident applicants, the top ten invention patent filers were:
Applied Materials (US) (302), Tokyo Electron (Japan) (217), Samsung Electronics (R. Korea) (197), Qualcomm (US) (155), Coupang (R. Korea) (152), Kioxia (Japan) (130), Shin-Etsu Chemical (Japan) (106), Nitto Denko (Japan) (91), Fujifilm (Japan) (88), and Resonac (Japan) (64).

Separately, design patent applications filed by non-residents totaled 833. The top five filing countries (or regions) were: Japan (223), Mainland China (146), United States (118), Switzerland (116), and France (68).
Applications from Japan, Switzerland, and France all recorded growth, with filings from Switzerland and France increasing by over 50%, reflecting significant growth momentum.

TIPO received 27,038 trademark registration applications (34,043 classes) in Q3, a 16% increase from the same period last year. Resident applicants accounted for 79%, while non-residents made up 21%. The number of trademark applications reached the highest quarterly total since Q4 of 1998, with resident filings exceeding 20,000 for the first time.

Non-resident applicants filed 5,733 trademark registration applications. The top five filing countries (or regions) were: Mainland China (1,687), Japan (872), United States (774), R. Korea (606), and Hong Kong (245).
Non-resident filings were primarily concentrated in the fields of information technology, retail services, and daily consumer goods.

By industry, the top three sectors for trademark registration applications in Taiwan were: Agriculture (6,323), followed by Business services (5,590) and Health (5,502).
